CUP SUCCESS FOR UNDER 15’S

Newton Athletic’s talented under 15 team archived a magnificent success at the weekend being the first team from the Chester area to win the Cheshire County F.A. Junior Challenge Cup at Barnton F.C. They contested the twenty fourth final for players aged over 13 but under 15.

The team on the way to the final beat some very good teams from as far as Dukinfield scoring 31 goals and conceding only 7. The final was against a very good Wilmslow Sports F.C with Newton coming out as victors 2-0 with goals from Carl Plevin and Sam Ashbrook.

Newton Athletic are very proud of the teams success which is in no short measure due the hard work and commitment of Tim Hunt and Bernard Conncanon.

PRESS RELEASE

NEWTON ATHLETIC YOUTH FC RECEIVE FA CHARTER STANDARD CLUB AWARD AND FOOTBALL FOUNDATION GRANT

Cheshire County Football Association has awarded Chester based club Newton Athletic Youth FC the prestigious FA Charter Standard Club award for grassroots football.

The FA Charter Standard programme, supported by FA partner McDonald’s, was established to help clubs to improve standards of coaching, administration, player development and safeguarding children. The FA Charter Standard award is presented to those clubs like Newton Athletic YFC who have raised their standards in these areas and lead the field in promoting best football practice, both on and off the pitch in grassroots football.

Stephen Jones & Bernard Concannon Joint Chairmen of Newton Athletic commented that this is a great day for Newton Athletic and we are very proud of the clubs achievement. Newton Athletic was formed in 1991 and has built up an enviable reputation over many years of producing football to a very high standard. This is without doubt in no short measure as due to the dedication of the coaches, managers and committee members who not only now but over the years have served the club.

This award shows to the whole community that Newton Athletic Youth FC is a safe and well run football club who is proud to display the Charter Standard mark of approval. These awards will also show any potential sponsors that Newton Athletic Youth FC is well run and a safe and worthwhile place to invest in the children and youth of the area.

Peter Nicholls, Senior Football Development Officer comments “The FA Charter Standard award acknowledges the support Newton Athletic Youth FC provides to the local community and their efforts to ensure the club offers opportunities forplayers to develop their skills and play football in a safe and positive environment. The Cheshire County FA is committed to raising the standards of football at grassroots level and the dedication and achievements of clubs like Newton Athletic Youth FC make this possible.”

Christine Russell MP Comments
“As you will know, the Football Foundation was set up by the Government in 2000 because we recognise that for England to have a successful national team you have to invest in facilities and coaching at a grassroots level. It is funded one third by the Government, one third by the FA and one third by the Premier League. The Foundation is now Britain’s largest sports charity, and it invests £40million per year in clubs like Newton Athletic Youth Football Club.

I believe that professional football clubs (like Chester City FC!) have a great deal to learn from clubs like yours that are well run and managed, where you encourage and nurture young talent, and where you value the contributions of volunteers; and as a result are a real asset to your community”.

Lord Mayor of Chester Cllr John Ebo Comments
“It was a pleasure for Miriam and I to attend on Saturday; one of the pleasures of being Lord Mayor is that you get an insight to the many facets of society and good works being done by many hundreds of volunteers who, sadly, are often unnoticed outside of their particular sphere. I hope that this piece of publicity will go some way to address the balance”.

Newton Athletic is also delighted to be celebrating an award of a £5000 grant from the Football Foundation to improve and expand the club. Stephen Jones said that this money will enable us not only to expand the club but also improve at every level. We have been actively encouraging youth and former players to turn to coaching. This money will assist us to fund FA courses and qualifications to continue the clubs development. Our newly appointed Head Coach Nick Jones started playing for this club at 5 years of age and this sort of individual development is something we as a club are very proud of.

Newton Athletic Youth FC were presented with their award on Saturday 27 February at Cheshire County Sports Club, and also received a cheque from Football Foundation – ‘Grow the Game’ funding for their application to support the club development of creating new mixed teams and a Girls section within the club structure.

The presentation was attended by Christine Russell MP, The Lord & Lady Mayor of Chester, Cllr John and Mrs Miriam Ebo, Leader of the Council, Cllr Mike Jones along with representatives of the Cheshire FA.

Since 2002, over 117 clubs representing more than 1300 teams in Cheshire have achieved FA Charter Standard Club, Adult Club, Development or Community Club status.

Alex Lucas
Marine | Died 24 November 2008

Died as a result of an explosion in the Kajaki area of Helmand, Afghanistan

Alexander Lucas, a Royal Marine from 45 Commando Royal Marines, was killed as a result of an explosion in the Kajaki area of Helmand Province on 24 November, 2008.

Marine Lucas, 24, from Edinburgh, was taking part in a patrol at the time. He received medical treatment at the scene but died of his wounds while being taken by helicopter to the military hospital at Camp Bastion.

He had been due to leave the Marines and marry his fiancee, with whom he had a baby daughter, next year.

The soldier was a specialist engineer whose job it was to clear the way in dangerous situations for his colleagues to follow, the Ministry of Defence said.

He was injured by an enemy Improvised Explosive Device (IED) while his company, Victor, conducted a clearing operation around Kajaki alongside Afghan National Army troops.

His father Adrian said: “Alec was a deeply loved son and brother, who was devoted to his fiancee and daughter. He brought so much happiness to all who met him and was described by close friends as a fantastic role model. He will be deeply missed and cherished by all who knew him.”

A keen footballer, he was due to marry his partner Jill in July 2009. The couple have a daughter, Cara, aged less than one at the time of his death.

Lieutenant Colonel Jim Morris, commanding officer of Arbroath-based 45 Commando Royal Marines, said: “Brave, determined, cheerful and loyal, he was a hugely valued member of 45 Commando Group.”

“Whether deployed on operations or playing a leading role in the success of our unit football team he has made a great contribution to the Commando and to the Royal Marines as a whole.”

“He was killed playing a vital part in an essential operation to clear an area of explosive devices in order to improve the safety of his company and the local people. 45 Commando has lost a great friend and colleague and I know that the whole unit joins me in sending my deepest condolences to his family and friends as they come to terms with the loss of such an outstanding individual."”

Marine Mark Bathgate, a close friend, said: “Alex was the sort of bloke who would always be there, no matter what. 'A true ‘bootneck’ who would always shine through in a crowd.”

“He had all the qualities of a true commando and more. Away from the corps Alex was blessed to have had his fiancee, and his beautiful daughter. He was a family man with traditional values, who would always go the extra mile to help those closest to him. Alex will be greatly missed by all those who knew him, but will never be forgotten by those who thought so much of him. Alex Lucas - True Gent.”

Defence Secretary John Hutton said: “I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Marine Lucas. He displayed the very finest qualities expected of a Royal Marine while serving in Afghanistan.”
